MECACHROME and MCE-5 DEVELOPMENT SA
enter into a partnership for the mass
production of MCE-5 VCRi engines
A commercial, technical and industrial agreement
was signed by MECACHROME and MCE-5 DEVELOPMENT at
Aubigny-sur-Nère in France on May 12th 2011, by Mr.
Julio DE SOUSA (President of MECACHROME) and Mr.
Jean-François ROCHE (CEO of MCE-5 DEVELOPMENT).
Presented in advance to Mr. François FILLON,
president of the Urban Community of Sablé-sur-Sarthe
and Prime Minister of France, the goal of this strategic
agreement is to coordinate and associate the resources
of both structures to promote MCE-5 VCRi variable
compression ratio technology and the know-how,
skills and experience of both companies to
carmakers worldwide in the aim of mass producing the MCE-5 VCRi engine.
Mass production of MCE-5 VCRi
variable compression ratio engines
Developed by MCE-5 DEVELOPMENT since
2000, this internal combustion engine is
compatible with all the technologies currently
available for gasoline engines, such as direct
injection, VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and turbocharging.
The energy efficiency of internal combustion engines has always
been improved by adding new functions. MCE-5 VCRi proposes a
decisive additional function: compression ratio control. At
identical performance levels, it will provide fuel consumption
reductions of 20% for small vehicles and up to 35%
for high-performance vehicles. After 13 years of R & D,
this technology is now ready to enter into the process
leading to its mass production by 2016-2017.
A partnership that strengthens French industry
This partnership also aims at reinforcing the economic
model of both structures while enhancing the support provided
by the public authorities and institutions in the framework
of subsidized Research & Development programs.
Finally, this agreement between two innovative companies
should boost the development of French and regional automotive engine manufacturing for small and medium series.
About MECACHROME
Founded in 1937, Mecachrome, based in France, is a major
player in the design, engineering, manufacturing and assembly
of complex, high-precision components intended for aeronautic
and automotive applications. This includes components for
aerostructures, airplane and high-end car engines, and race
car engines. Mecachrome currently employs over 1400 people worldwide.
The Sablé-sur-Sarthe site has been specialized in the
machining and assembly of engine elements (cylinder heads,
engine blocks, oil sumps, etc.) since 1993 for the car and
truck sectors. They support their customers in each project
phase, from design, through pre-series, to small and medium series
production, and this while complying with quality standards,
costs and lead times. They have received several certifications,
including ISO 9001 certification for system quality assurance
in 1997, ISO/TS 16949 in 2001 and ISO 14001 for environmental
responsibility in 2002. Its customers include very prestigious
car and truck makers such as RENAULT, AMG, DAIMLER, VOLVO, JOHN DEERE AND RENAULT TRUCKS.

About MCE-5 DEVELOPMENT
Created in 2000, MCE-5 DEVELOPMENT is based in Lyon,
France and is developing the MCE-5 VCRi engine (variable
compression ratio engine) that makes it possible to significantly reduce fuel
consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 to 35% depending on the type
of vehicle. MCE-5 VCRi technology is a response to the environmental,
energy and economic challenges faced by the automotive industry.
MCE-5 VCRi engines combine both the advantages of Diesel engines and those of gasoline engines.
MCE-5 DEVELOPMENT has invested over 70 million euros to date in
the development of MCE-5 VCRi technology, which could be ready for
mass production by 2016-2017 thanks to a consortium comprising 12
internationally recognized European companies. The MCE-5 VCRi project
is backed and financed by several French and European institutions.
It’s an example of successful public-private financing. Alongside 400
French and foreign company shareholders, over one third of the total
research & development has been financed by the French State and two regions.
