The
MCE-5 piston kinematics is strictly identical to
that of a conventional engine with the same rod/crank
ratio. Its kinematics never varies, whatever the
Compression Ratio:
As can be seen on this graph, the Top Dead Center
of MCE-5 is always located on the crankshaft zero
position whatever the Compression Ratio. These characteristics
will permit to implement VCR on future SI engines
by making the most of engine designers’ know-how
and knowledge related to internal aerodynamics of
conventional engines.
Thanks to this conservative feature, future VCR
engines’ development will benefit from piston
kinematics, volume variation laws and resulting
impacts on combustion, performance and pollutants
generation control that are mastered from decades
by the automotive industry.
